昨日15日は卒業論文題目提出の締切日でした。論文そのものの締切は来年1月10日ですから、ずいぶん早いわけですが、4年生はみんな苦労していたようです。
題名なんていうのは要するに器に貼り付けたラベルみたいなもので、大事なのは器の中身なのだから、そんなものどうでもいいではないかと思われるかもしれませんが、それは素人の考えですね。実際は題名はとても重要。いい題名を思いつくか思いつかないかで論文の出来が左右されることがあるくらいです。題名に納得がいかないとなかなか執筆もはかどらないし、逆にいい題名が思いつくと調子づいて、自分でもびっくりするくらいアイデアが浮かんできたりすることもあります。
要するに、題名を決めるというのは自己暗示をかけるということなのでしょう。いい題名が思い浮かぶと自分が少しばかり偉くなったような気がするし、逆にダサい題名だと自分がちょっとばかになったような気がする。人文系の場合、論文の題名といってもいろいろで、思い切りスタイリッシュにすると気分が昂揚して良い場合もあるし、あえてガチガチに堅い紀要論文風にしたほうが書きやすい場合もある。人を食ったとぼけたようなものにしておいて、独りでニヤニヤ笑いながら書くのが楽しい場合もあります（性格悪いですが、私はこれ、たまにやります）。とはいえ、学生であればせっかくいい題名を考えても指導教員にダメ出しされたり、教員でも編集者に変更を要請されていやいや従わなければならない場合もあるから、いつも思うようにいくとは限りませんが。
