福岡タワー （椰子茂る百道浜から望む）
福岡タワーに行ってきた。福岡市早良区百道浜2丁目，平成元年（1989年）に建てられた全高234mの日本一の海浜タワーである。地上123mの展望室は，博多湾や市街地を一望できる場所にある。「百道浜」「室見川」という地名は，実は，B先生の愛して止まない椎名林檎の「正しい街」（1999年）に歌われている場所でもあり，入門の授業で私が取り上げた「インファント島」という架空の島の表象を説明するために，サイードの言う imaginative geography（心象地理と一応訳されている）という概念を引き合いに出して，B先生がまとめをされたものだ。
奇しくもその授業の翌日，私は福岡へ飛び，「シーサイドももち」にある福岡タワーに行くことになっていた。それは，『ゴジラvsスペースゴジラ』（1994年）の最終決戦地でもあったし，キングギドラが福岡市中心部を破壊する（『ゴジラvsキングギドラ』，1991年）空中からの視点を体感したかったからでもある。ゴジラ映画のイマジナティヴ・ジオグラフィーを目的とした今回の旅は（本当は，文科省特色GPフォーラム担当のための出張のついでだが），思わぬところで，椎名林檎の歌詞との接点があった。
地下鉄空港線の「西新」で降りて，徒歩で北に向かう。西南学院大学や元寇防塁跡のある界隈だ。実は，ここまでが，嘗ての海浜地区で，現在の西新通りが海岸線に相当した。昭和62年（1987年）発行の帝国書院の地図を見ると，福岡タワーは当然のこと，「シーサイドももち」そのものがない。その後，埋め立てが進み，現在の「百道浜」は完全な人工浜なのである。旅行案内書『るるぶ楽楽』には「白砂の人工ビーチ」と謳ってあり，九州は勿論，韓国からも恋人たちが大挙して押し寄せる有名なデート・スポットになっている。首都圏なら，さながら「お台場」「レインボーブリッジ」といった風情だ。百道浜は，室見川と樋井川の間の海岸を指し，埋め立て前の旧「百道浜」（西新～百道の旧海岸）と埋め立て後の新「百道浜」（シーサイドももちの町名）が存在する。

「百道浜も君も室見川も無い」という「正しい街」の歌詞は，旧「百道浜」が失われた事実を反映したものでないのなら，やはり，新「百道浜」すなわち「シーサイドももち」の現実の風景がまずは広がっているはずであり，実際の記憶や作られた虚構はそれに附随している。歌詞の「此の街」は福岡市街であり，「空港」（駅ではない）という発想も，市街地に隣接し，市街地上空を飛行空域とする福岡空港の特性なくしてはあり得ない。百道浜からも，博多湾を南下して着陸進入する航空機が見通せるのである。

この歌詞について，百道浜や室見川なんて誰も知らないだろう，という前提に基づいて解釈を展開している一例が，他ならぬ我らのB先生なのであるが，新潟や東京での受容のされ方という点では，確かに，福岡市に暮らした椎名林檎の私的な「現実」が逆に薄まり，抽象度の高い恋歌と化しているように見える（またはそう計算して見せている）とも言える。そして，「百道浜」「室見川」に，「神田川」や「隅田川」の幻影を勝手に重ねてしまっているのかも知れない。しかし，例えば「お台場もレインボーブリッジも」と歌うかわりに「隅田川も勝鬨橋（かちどきばし）も」と歌えば，喚起される映像はセピア色となり，エレジーの色調を帯びる可能性が高いように，「シーサイドももちも福岡タワーも」とは言わず「百道浜も室見川も」と表現した理由は，誰も知らないだろうから，という表象効果だけを狙ったものでは恐らくない。隅田川や勝鬨橋なんて誰も知らないだろうと言って福岡の大学で授業が行なわれていたとしたら，東京の人は嗤うであろう。

「百道浜」は，紛れもなく，西日本の現代の恋人たちのデート・スポットであり，博多湾をめぐるお洒落な高速船の発着場なのである。「空想の地理学」は，「歴史的事実としての地理学」との緊張関係があってこそ，想像力を空高く飛翔させることができる。私が，南洋群島とインファント島の関係にこだわる理由もそこにある。
で，その同じ「百道浜」で，ゴジラとスペースゴジラ，それに，キングギドラも暴れまくった訳だが，一体どんな理由があったのだろうか。それは，恐らく，福岡タワーの「高さ」と8,000枚の「ハーフミラー」にある。デート・スポットとしての「百道浜」ではなく，建造物としての「福岡タワー」の方が重要なのだ。これは，今度，B先生に福岡へ行っていただいて考えてもらおうかな（笑）。
